The Villager Community Bus Services

A million miles and 300,000 passengers in 30 years

The Villager Community Bus is an established scheduled service operating in parts of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. Our main routes are through some of the smaller North Cotswolds villages and towns with the primary aim of serving those communities for which other means of transport are either difficult or non-existent. See Villager Bus History

Hiring a bus

Hire MeAn important aspect of The Villager is the hiring service provided at reasonable rates for social groups and people who might have difficulty affording a commercial coach. Hiring is normally with our driver provided and must end by 11 pm on weekdays and 6 pm at weekends.

Typical hires for groups and personal activities include school runs, sports clubs’ events, social outings and charity events.

Our buses hold 16 seated passengers. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Unfortunately, we have no facilities for wheelchairs.

Hire charges, including fuel costs, are £20 standing charge, plus £1.30 per mile, with a minimum of £30 (VAT is not applicable).

Our Service

The Villager buses carry 300 passengers from 66 villages in the Cotswolds every week

We do not compete with commercial bus operators services but rather we complement them in terms of the routes and villages we serve – our buses are generally smaller to help penetrate some of the less accessible but still important (and by and large prettier) parts of the Cotswolds. Because our drivers and administrative staff are all volunteers we can keep our costs and prices low.

The Villager is supported financially by Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire County Councils which enables us to ensure that our fleet of five buses is maintained and regularly serviced and tested professionally, and that we can invest in new replacement buses as needed. Buses carry full insurance for passengers and drivers. All our drivers take the MIDAS bus proficiency course and are re-tested every three years to ensure that they as well as the buses are in the best possible condition to serve our passengers.

We operate nineteen regular scheduled timetabled bus routes decided by the various County Councils whose responsibility it is to provide transport facilities for rural areas. Our five buses run Monday-Friday every week (not Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day) on routes centred on Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Norton, Moreton-in-Marsh, Burford, Witney and outlying villages. The routes are fixed but (Different routes run each day but each route is to a fixed schedule) vary each day (see Villager Bus Timetables). Some stops are by Request only, needing a telephone call to make sure the driver is aware of the pick-up (see Contacts).

Payment for travel can be made in two ways: cash or national bus pass.

Given the voluntary nature of our services, donations are always welcome as are new drivers who can commit to one morning or afternoon a fortnight (see Villager Bus Volunteer Drivers).
